For years, I struggled with something I couldn’t quite put into words: I could not find knowledge in modern physics.
That was true before the State in the Fire, and it remained true afterward.
What changed was that, seven years after the State, I discovered the work of Walter and Lao Russell.
And suddenly, I had a language for knowledge that is a priori to sensed observation.
What I found in the Russell’s Cosmogeny was not simply another interpretation of physics. It was an entirely different premise of what knowledge is and what reality is.
And that distinction is crucial.
We are studying effect and calling it cause
Modern physics has become successful at measuring and mathematically describing physical phenomena. It can predict the behaviour of observed to be particles, energy, fields and other observable effects with astonishing precision.
But precision in describing an effect does not tell us what caused the effect. It may be a path to uncovering knowledge, but it may not. It’s kind of like looking for a set of lost keys under a street light, because the street light illuminates an area of observation.
This is where Walter Russell’s criticism of quantum physics seems radical to most but makes common sense to me.
Russell said, in essence, that effect is illusion, and that we cannot find the cause of effect within effect.
That completely changes the question about where to look.
If everything we can observe physically is an effect of a deeper creative principle, then continuing to dissect physical effects – even with increasingly sophisticated instruments and mathematics – does not necessarily take us closer to their cause.
We can dig under the street light.
We can keep going deeper into the observation of a material atom.
We can observe smaller particles.
We can discover new observable fields and forces.
We can build increasingly elaborate mathematical models based on the initial theory that we can find the keys more easily under the light of the lamp.
But if all of those things are themselves effects illuminating effects, then we are still looking within effect for the cause of effect.
We haven’t changed the premise.
Russell turns the direction of inquiry around
The conventional scientific approach, like the search for the lost keys under the light of the street lamp, begins with what can be observed.
We observe.
We measure out observations.
We isolate variables that affect our observations.
We construct mathematical relationships between observations.
We test predictions for probabilities of observable results.
And when the predictions work, when the keys are found under the lamp, the theory gains acceptance.
There is value in this approach. But it’s hit and miss. And Russell’s Cosmogeny asks us to consider the fundamental:
What if the keys were lost where we cannot observe them?
Instead of beginning with matter and asking how matter produces everything else, Russell begins with Stillness.
Stillness is not simply an object that isn’t moving.
It is the fundamental condition from which motion arises.
From the Russellian perspective, creation is based on the fulcrum and lever principle. Motion, and the seeming of mass, begins with the Stillness of Mind and the thinking that leverages the seeming of motion.
That is not a minor adjustment to physics.
It is a reversal of its foundational direction.
The atom would no longer be what we think it is
This brings me back to the question I was exploring about quantum physics.
What would happen if physics stopped assuming that the atom is fundamentally centered by a material nucleus and instead considered the atom to be centred by stillness?
That doesn’t mean imagining an atom as a little motionless ball.
It means changing what we believe an atom is. It means admitting that just because we can see under the street light, that doesn’t mean we’ll find the keys there. We may need to find them in the absence of observation.
Under the conventional material premise, we investigate the atom as something that exists under a certain light and then ask what it does.
Under Russell’s premise, the atom is an expression of a fundamental condition of the stillness of Mind expressing the idea of motion. What appears to us as matter is the effect of motion around that still center.
The atom is therefore not ultimately a piece of “stuff.”
It is an expression of a principle.
And that changes everything.
The questions we ask about quantum phenomena would have to change because our understanding of what is producing those phenomena would have changed.
This is where my own experience becomes relevant
I had no scientific vocabulary for the State in the Fire.
I wholly KNEW Mind in the absence of sensed observation.
I could not adequately translate this knowing into the language available to me.
And I don’t mean that I had formed a theory and then experienced something that seemed to confirm it.
It was the other way around.
The experience came first.
The knowledge came first.
The language came later.
Seven years afterward, I found Walter and Lao Russell’s work.
And their descriptions of the fundamental nature of creation corresponded to what I wholly knew – a priori to description.
That was profoundly different from finding a scientific theory that happened to explain an unusual experience.
The Russell’s gave me a conceptual vocabulary for something I had encountered before I knew his vocabulary existed.
That is why their work became so important to me.
Cause and effect
This is also why I don’t think the issue can be resolved simply by asking whether Russell’s ideas can be fitted into existing quantum mechanics.
That still leaves the fundamental premise intact.
The deeper question is whether quantum mechanics itself begins at the level of effect rather than cause.
If it does, then adding Russellian concepts to existing physics isn’t enough.
The foundation has to change.
We would have to stop asking only:
“What does this particle do?”
and begin asking:
“What principle produces the appearance of the particle in the first place?”
We would have to distinguish between describing an effect and understanding its cause.
And that distinction is enormous.
A mathematical equation can accurately describe what happens without necessarily telling us why there is something happening at all.
The street lamp helps us observe. But it doesn’t necessarily illuminate the keys.
A simulation can reproduce an observable phenomenon without necessarily revealing the creative principle that produces the phenomenon.
An experiment can establish a relationship between effects without necessarily revealing the originating cause.
That is the distinction missing in modern physics, and wasn’t resolved through observation until I encountered the Russell’s.
Why this matters beyond physics
For me, this isn’t merely an intellectual disagreement between two theories of the universe.
It matters because our understanding of causation determines our experience.
If we believe that reality is fundamentally material, we naturally attempt to manipulate the material effects in order to solve our problems.
We keep treating effects.
We fight effects.
We suppress effects.
We try to control effects.
We get angry when the observable universe doesn’t reveal the keys.
And we wonder why the same problems continue to appear in different forms.
But if effects are generated by a deeper principle, then the place to intervene is not in the effect.
We have to understand the cause.
That is where Russell’s Cosmogeny is revolutionary.
It isn’t simply telling us another story about atoms. It’s not telling us “try looking under this lamp”.
It is proposing that creation itself has a knowable principle, and that this principle begins in Stillness.
Turning physics upside down
So when I say that I think modern physics needs to change its premise, I mean exactly that.
I’m not saying we should simply reinterpret quantum mechanics.
I’m not saying that Russell provides an interesting philosophical metaphor for existing physics.
I’m saying that if the Russell’s are correct, which I know they are, then the ontology underneath physics is wrong.
And if the foundation is wrong, no amount of increasingly precise measurement of effects can ultimately reveal the cause.
We have been successful at learning how effects behave.
But the next great revolution in physics would be learning how to ask a fundamentally different question:
What produces the effects?
And the answer does not begin with matter.
It begins with Stillness.
That is what I knew without words and what the Russells gave me, with words.
And after years of searching for a language that could express the State in the fire, I can honestly say:
Thank goodness for the Russell Cosmogeny. The physics for the Age of Knowing Light vs searching for knowledge in effects.

Hi Darcie, Nick Mathews here (Nashville, TN). I love what you wrote. It gets at the core. It is the core. I haven’t had a State of Fire experience in this lifetime, but I’ve had a knowing inside since I was a child. I went to Stanford a long time ago, but failed to complete my degree–and didn’t know why until more recently. The information I studied, whether in Chemistry/Physics OR in Religious Studies from the professors/books of the time just didn’t ring true. I’ve always felt inside, like a guiding force, or a passion I could barely describe that Science and Spirituality needed to go hand in hand, one complementing the other at the very least. One of the guest speakers coming to the Homecoming 2026, on Facebook, was the person who led me to find the Russell’s teachings. I knew instantly, after 60 years of researching, I’d found what I’d been looking for. I found a meaningful connection between science and God. The Russell Cosmogeny needs to be promoted in every way to as many who have ears to hear. I’m coming to the Homecoming (2026) for the first time. I’m wondering how to help. Not sure if you’ll be there, but if you are, I’d love to meet.

I can relate!! Most of my life I have suppressed knowledge. I found school very difficult too.
I absolutely agree that the Russell’s work needs to be promoted as much as possible – that’s ultimately the purpose behind my writing. That’s wonderful you’re attending the homecoming!!
